Research Summary
Prof. Ramon Gomis’ group has made significant achievements in its research on the effect of sodium tungstate as an antidiabetic and anti-obesity agent. The administration of sodium tungstate to diabetic animal models stimulates pancreatic beta cell mass recovery and inhibits body weight gain by enhancing the effects of leptin signaling on appetite and satiety. The invention was patented and licensed to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, which performed different pre-clinical and clinical trials at phase II as proof-of-concept study.

On another front, Prof. Gomis and his group have also made a significant discovery of new mechanisms of pancreatic islet regeneration in different animal models of experimental diabetes, with a special interest in substances released by adipocytes capable of modifying cellular plasticity.

Finally, the group has also performed important research involving the isolation and transplantation of human pancreatic islets, and immunosupressors and modulators as applied to the prevention or delayed onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Background
Prof. Ramon Gomis was awarded both his MD and PhD by the University of Barcelona. After performing postdoctoral training at the Free University of Brussels, his career as researcher and medical doctor has been based at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, where, for over 25 years, he served in a number of positions: Staff Doctor, Consultant, Senior Consultant, Head of the Diabetes Unit, Head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department, and Director of Research. He also served as Director of the Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica. Currently, he is Director of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS).

An accomplished author, Prof. Gomis has published numerous articles in internationally renowned scientific journals, primarily in the first and second quartile, as well as multiple book chapters. Since 1988, and as Principal Investigator, he has been granted continued research funding from a variety of public Spanish organizations and European Union programs, as well as private companies that forge partnerships for developing pharmaceutical and technological advancements. He has patented 2 inventions, with 2 more currently being patented. Prof. Gomis has held appointments such as President of the Spanish Diabetes Society, member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Council, member of the Academia Europaea and the Institute of Catalan Studies, Scientific Director of the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders (CIBERDEM), and President of the Local Organizing Committee of the 49th EASD Annual Meeting in 2013. He actively collaborates with research groups from universities in Europe, the United States, South America and Japan.

In teaching, Prof. Gomis has been affiliated with the University of Barcelona for decades, currently as Chair of Endocrinology. In management, he has promoted biomedical research by founding a translational lab in the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS, leading and directing research organizations, and by fostering the creation of national and international networks in diabetes research, such as CIBERDEM.
